Somatic mutation in 1990 Skunk #1 x Haze

A somatic mutation in our ‘1990 Skunk No. 1 x Haze’.

The likely cause is that a single cell at the two-cell stage developed a mutation that stopped chlorophyll production, and this mutation was inherited by all its daughter cells.

Such mutations are very common in fruit trees, where apples – for example – can show a green and red hemisphere.

Somatic mutation in an apple

In the case of this old ‘1990 Skunk No. 1 x Haze’ cannabis hybrid, the mutation showed in just this one leaf. Because leaves are non-regenerative tissue, it won’t be passed on to the plant’s offspring.

Some genotypes appear more prone to these types of mutations, but afaik the causes aren’t yet well understood.
