A Greek heirloom collected from farmers in Kalamata region 15 years ago. This line was cultivated in their village for more than 30 years, though cultivation has ceased because of enforcement pressure, and today the village is abandoned.

‘Kalamata Red’ was a famous underground brand in the ’70s and ’80s. Red colour is a trait of some plants in this line, particularly in cold conditions. Other phenotypes are light green to gold. Euphoric, creative, and ‘psychedelic’ effects are what this strain is known for.

Various theories are suggested as to the origin of these domesticates, none of which can yet be verified. Notably, on the Phylos Galaxy chart, no immediate ancestor for Kalamata Red can yet be determined. Probable origins include the wider Balkans and Eastern Mediterranean.

Seeds were produced from several selected mothers and a choice “alpha male” from the 2019 generation. The most recent generation was focused on the selection of less stretchy individuals with a shorter flowering period and classic ‘hashplant’ characteristics.

Plants have relatively low nutrient requirements. Resistance to pests, mold, and heat is superb.

Due to their rarity and the risks involved in finding and maintaining these plants in Greece, the price tag is high.
